LVAHSo you think you want a bird?

LVAHBirds can make great companions for the right home! One thing to consider before bringing a bird into your family is are you really prepared to provide daily care and enrichment for this creature? Before purchasing your companion, take time to research the type of bird you are considering because too many times, birds are brought into a home and then the owner realizes they can not care or deal with the personality, loudness, or messiness of the bird. Do not buy a bird on impulse just because it “looks and acts cute.”

Here are a few other things to think about before purchasing your new feathered friend:

  • LVAHWhat type of bird do you want? Some birds are louder than others, some talk more than others, some birds are messier than others, some need larger cages than others, some require special diets, and every bird needs daily interaction (some more than others). They will become part of your family!
  • Are you prepared for a lifelong commitment? Some birds live longer than others (60+ years). They are a lot like children.
  • What type of home do you live in? An apartment might work for a Budgie or Cockatiel but not so much for a Cockatoo!
  • Where are you going to purchase the bird? From a pet store, breeder, a rescue? Has the bird been examined by an avian veterinarian? If not, the bird should have a full physical examination to be sure it is well. It is important to establish a relationship with an avian veterinarian before health issues arise.

LVAHBirds are very special creatures with special needs! If you decide this is the companion for you, you will have years of a companionship and enjoyment with your new friend!

Below are a few websites that provide more information on birds.
